The GFWC North Myrtle Beach Woman’s Club recently presented a $3,000 check to the Barnabas Horse Foundation to support a unique healing retreat for military women who have experienced trauma during their service. The check was presented to Sue McKinney, President and Founder and Jen Faro, Community Outreach Coordinator of the Barnabas Horse Foundation, with seven members of the Woman’s Club in attendance.
The donation was made possible through the SCFWC Progress Foundation, which helps fund charitable contributions through a national grant supporting local GFWC clubs in aiding non-profit organizations. The funds will directly support a one-day retreat at a serene farm in Murrells Inlet, exclusively designed for up to 12 active or retired military women.
The retreat provides a safe and peaceful environment for women who have silently endured the trauma of sexual abuse during their military service. Through equine-assisted therapy and other restorative activities, participants have the opportunity to find peace, connection, and renewal in a supportive, stress-free setting.
The Barnabas Horse Foundation, home to 23 therapy horses including miniature horses and donkeys, provides equine-assisted psychotherapy to individuals who have experienced trauma. Their services support a range of vulnerable populations, including abused and traumatized children, human trafficking survivors, domestic violence survivors, veterans suffering from PTSD, and first responders. The organization’s mission is to improve the quality of life and relationships of survivors through the healing power of horse and human interaction.
It was a beautiful day to present this check and witness firsthand the incredible work being done at the Barnabas Horse Foundation, said Kathy Heagen, President of the GFWC North Myrtle Beach Woman’s Club.
The GFWC North Myrtle Beach Woman’s Club remains committed to supporting local organizations that make a lasting impact on the community, and this donation represents their ongoing dedication to fostering healing and hope.
